Concreter licences in WA

You don’t need a licence to undertake work as a concreter in WA if employed by a registered builder.

If you wish to contract with others on building work valued over $20,000, you’ll need to register as a building contractor.

If you work in construction, you’ll need a Construction Induction Card, also known as a white card. More information is available under the Construction Induction Training page on the DMIRS website.

Concreters moving to WA from another state or territory within Australia

Concreters don’t need to apply for mutual recognition as they do not require a licence to trade.

If you’re a licenced builder contractor in another state or territory and are relocating to WA, you’re eligible for Mutual Recognition (MR). If you’re working in WA temporarily you’re eligible for Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR). Learn more about getting your licence recognised in WA via the DMIRS website.

What kind of work could I have as a concreter in WA?

Some work that WA concreters can expect in their role:

  • Laying steel reinforcing

  • Pouring, smoothing and levelling concrete

  • Spreading, shaping and sealing concrete

  • Using trowels, trowelling machines and screeds to float, smooth and polish concrete surfaces

  • Installing steel plates, steel bolts, door sills and other fixtures

  • Forming joints using a straightedge and jointer

  • Rubbing concrete with water and abrasives to finish walls

  • Covering concrete with plastic and sand to protect it as it sets

  • Cutting concrete using power tools

  • Colouring freshly poured concrete using powders.

How to become a concreter in WA

You don’t need a formal qualification to work as a concreter, but an apprenticeship is desirable amongst employers.
